Mac Dre Mac Dre was one of the most popular Yay Area rappers and has paved the way for the current generation of Hyphy artists. Born in Oakland and raised in Vallejo, Mac Dre is widely known for putting Vallejo on the map. He received prominence with his move to his Romp Label and rode the notoriety that surrounded him to the top of the charts. He was arrested in 1992 for preparing to rob a Fresno bank, and ended up recording an album while in prison. Mac Dre was shot and killed on November 1st, 2004 in Kansas City, Missouri.
